Basic Tips for Offense

Move, Move, Move

You cannot be at all effective offensively unless YOU AND THE BALL move around the field. Remember that the ball moves quicker in the air than with someone running with it so move it through the air whenever possible. Use V-cuts when moving off ball. Attackman should never carry the ball in a straight line, always zig-zag and change speed and direction as much as possible.

Keep the field wide

Keep the field as spread as possible in any given offensive set. The idea is to get the defense to move quickly and come out of a "packed set" Force the slides to come as far as possible. If the slides are forced to be long, it will create more space to fill and receive a pass or feed.

"Follow the slide....to space"

Offense can be extremely effective if everyone follows the slide and fills in to space. Make sure you cut in to space so there is a passing lane for the feeder to get you the ball. If you fill all slides there will eventually be an open shot.

"Move on a curl"

Dodge hard with the ball and look to curl away or reverse the flow of the ball. This is only effective if you get the defense to flow opposite where you are going to look for the shot.

Don't pass and stay

You must move after a pass even if you only are making a "v-cut" to flow back where you started. It is so easy for a defender to play you off ball when you just stand. There is no use in getting the ball around the set without constant player movement. "Working the ball around" is useless, it just gives the defense a chance to prepare for the set. Your offense should be structured to flow from one set to the next as options change. Trying to force a play or set with limited options to work over and over will lead only to limited success. It should be set up so that every player has multiple options with what to do on and off ball. Make the defense adjust to you not the other way around.

"Draw and Dump"

You must be able to draw a slide and dump the ball. No offense will work if you cannot successfully draw a slide and move the ball once the slide is committed.

"Overload the zone"

When facing a zone defense, overload by using a "sideways" set. This will force the zone to extend and force one side of the zone to cover multiple players. If they "cover in" off ball, then back side "seal picks" can be used to use the zone against itself.

TO and THROUGH

Always move towards the ball and then through the ball when receiving any pass. Never wait for the ball to get to you, move to it. V-cut away from the ball then to the ball when receiving it, this will create some space between you and the defenseman. When receiving a feed MOVE TOWARDS THE BALL NOT THE GOAL . Resist the urge to think you will be more likely to score because you are moving closer to the goal, you will more than likely be met by a defensemen, who are taught to stay between you and the goal.

Try to attack the pole

The idea behind this is simple, try to attack the pole so the short sticks are forced to make the slides, which will give the shooter more options and more time. Offenses are always looking to go after the short stick, but sometimes they do it when a pole will be the slide. Try to do it in a way that the final pass will go to a player whose slide defender will be a short stick.

Look to "exit" the ball

If you dodge and there is no shot and a slide has committed, look to exit the ball to an adjacent "replacing" player, most likely through x. If the exit player can move the ball quickly, you may find that the defense has over committed and a scoring opportunity on the back side will open up.
