Tips for Attack
Move, Move, Move
You cannot be at all effective
offensively unless YOU AND THE BALL move around the field. Remember
that the ball moves quicker in the air than with someone running with it so
move it through the air whenever possible. Always follow the slide to space.
Meaning always fill the spot so the feeder can see you, create a passing
lane to receive the ball. Use V-cuts when moving off ball.
Defender turns, you go
If your defender ever turns and
shows you the back of his helmet, that is the perfect time to move or cut.
You want to keep him occupied between his slide responsibilities and you as
much as possible. If he is constantly having to turn his head, it is only a
matter of time until you are open.
Move opposite off ball
When far side off ball, try to
position yourself opposite the ball so you can cut back to the ball to
receive. You want to get your defender flowing away from the ball and then
cut back to it quickly. Make the defender constantly have to turn to find
the ball and you. Do not bring your defender directly to the ball and create
a possible double team that your teammate cannot see coming.
Run on an arch or zig-zag pattern
Good attackman never run on straight
lines when carrying the ball, they are constantly moving in a zig-zag
pattern and moving on arches.
"Move away from the pressure and
look for an outlet"
It is important to move away from
any pressure applied by double team. By moving away from the pressure you
can draw your defenders out of position when the ball is reversed or moved
to an outlet.
Protect the stick
Always try to carry your body
between your stick and the defensemen. Keep the stick vertical and not
horizontal. When cradling one handed, keep your "off-arm elbow" out away
from your body and try to keep the elbow back to keep from showing the stick. Turn shoulders slightly so your back is towards the
defensemen, this will offer more protection. When switching hands using a
one handed cradle, ALWAYS BRING YOUR OFF HAND TO YOUR STICK, NEVER
BRING THE STICK YOUR OFF HAND. By doing this, you will keep the
stick protected behind your body and not "hang" the stick out to be checked.
The power cradle is a very effective way of protecting the stick in close to
the cage. The body position is similar to "posting up" in basketball. Keep
your back to your defensemen and use a hard and fast two handed cradle,
keeping the stick diagonal and using your body as a shield.
Hockey Stops
This is the most important footwork
to utilize as an offensive player. Hockey stops are used to quickly change
direction while keeping perfect balance as seen in the video below. LEARN
THEM

Keep your eyes up
Never dodge, pass, or shoot
without seeing your target first. Your eyes must be up at all times. You
must be able to see any slide coming and any open man. Also, when dodging to
the goal, keep your eyes on the goal as much as possible. One of the biggest
issues present in poor shooting, is that the player does not see the cage
until the last second and then shoots a poorly placed shot.
Understand the dodge
You must know how and when to
do a inside roll, question mark, face, split, rocker and freeze dodges.
IN EVERY DODGE, YOUR EYES MUST BE UP AND ABLE TO SEE THE FIELD AND GOAL.
An inside roll is effective when you are playing an aggressive defender.
Allow him to initiate contact as you come GLE(Goal Line Extended) and use a
power cradle. Once you are a step or two above GLE, slow down and try to
draw your defender top side and swing your outside foot around to seal the
defender upfield. DO NOT CHANGE HANDS ON THE INSIDE ROLL DODGE. You must get
your eyes around first to see the cage and any potential slide coming from
across the crease(COMA slide). If the COMA slide is coming, do not stop,
step directly away from the slide(move towards the wing) and look for the
feed or outlet. The rocker dodge is set up the same as the inside roll, you
simply fake the inside roll and turn back upfield for the shot. You must
sell this fake with your shoulders and head. For a question mark dodge, move quickly up field trying to
get topside and make the defender come at you. Once you get him to move up
field with you, take a step or two in towards the middle of the field and
peel away(the shape of a question mark will happen through these movements).
As you move through the dodge, switch hands and shoot back over your
shoulder. The face dodge is useful in close and whenever your defender is
coming at you with his shoulders high(this will signal he is out of control)
Have your stick up like you are ready to shoot or pass, bring the stick
across your face in a diagonal pattern from above your shoulder to slightly
below and turn your shoulders to protect the stick. Once your defensemen
goes through, step straight at your target and shoot. The split dodge is an
"open field" dodge meaning that you need to be out on the wing or driving in
from the corner. Move directly at the defender and get about two stick
lengths away(the defenders stick length, not the attack) If beginning right
handed, step at a diagonal towards your right with your right foot. Watch
your defenders waist if it moves at you, you have him right where you want
him. As soon as your right foot touches, plant and drive hard to your left
bringing the stick to your left hand, always split the stick shoulder to
shoulder, do not split with the stick at your waist or parallel to the
ground or over your head. You must "sell" the fake with your
head and shoulders. You want him to believe that you are going to stay with
your right. Be sure to drive upfield past your defender not simply away from
him. You want him to be behind you as you complete the dodge. The freeze dodge is great to use just after you have
received the ball. You want to step into your defender and throw your
shoulders and stick slightly forward and "freeze" as if you were going to shoot and get him to
come at you. Once he comes at you, drive your feet and move to the side several
steps and shoot quickly on the run.
TO and THROUGH
Always move towards the ball and
then through the ball when receiving any pass. Never wait for the ball to
get to you, move to it. V-cut away from the ball then to the ball when
receiving it, this will create some space between you and the defenseman.
When receiving a feed MOVE TOWARDS THE BALL NOT THE GOAL . Resist the
urge to think you will be more likely to score because you are moving closer
to the goal, you will more than likely be met by a defensemen, who are
taught to stay between you and the goal.
Learn to shoot on the run
If you can learn this skill and
learn it properly, you can shoot at any time and any place on the field, a
very dangerous combination. Show the goalie the numbers on your back when
beginning the shooting motion(More about this in the
Shooting section).
Shoot overhand, sidearm and
underhand
Many coaches agree that overhand
shooting is the best and it is, but is not the only option. You should
practice all three and not learn just one. If you are practicing all three
then you can become an extremely proficient shooter. One important thing to
remember is to change planes when you shoot (high to low, low to high
etc.etc.). Again, show the goalie the numbers on your back.
Opposite the ball, back up the
cage
Most offenses are set up so that
there is always a back up in case of missed shots. If you are opposite the
ball, you should be below to back up any potential missed shots or be an
outlet at x if needed.
